Agreement Signed for Using Biogas at the Ascension-de-Notre-Seigneur Landfill Site

SmartSoil Energy and the Regional Municipality of Lac-Saint-Jean-East are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement to develop a Landfill Gas to Energy Project at the sanitary landfill site in Ascension-de-Notre-Seigneur. As part of this agreement SmartSoil Energy will undertake a two step exploration campaign that will be completed before the end of December 2006. The purpose of this exploration campaign is to validate the technical and economic feasibility of the Landfill Gas to Energy Project. It will also initiate the detailed engineering design. The MRC and SmartSoil Energy will then be able to ratify the final agreement.

Additional Information;

  • SmartSoil Energy will invest $6.5 million before the end of 2007.
  • Profits will be shared with the MRC.
  • Electricity estimated at 2.4 MWe per year will be produced for a period of 20 years.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced at an estimated 88,000 tonnes per year.
Ascension will be the first Landfill Gas to Energy Project whose electricity will be transported for export by Hydro-Québec TransÉnergie. This is a first for the province and will help pave the way for many other similar projects throughout Quebec.

"I am pleased that this agreement has been signed," said Réjean Bouchard, Reeve of the MRC. "This is a project with a strategic impact. Indeed, the training and expertise that this project will involve in the regions could be useful at the provincial level. Thus, this project will promote job retention and creation at the local and regional levels."

As well, Claude-Bernard Lévesque, Chief Operating Officer and Vice President Finance of SmartSoil Energy, said "The success of this project will have a spin-off effect. Indeed, SmartSoil has already identified other landfill sites in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region that qualify for a project similar to the one proposed for the Ascension site."
