What we Offer
Step-by-Step to Implement a Landfill Gas to Energy Project
Potential Benefits Gained By Landfill Owners/Operators From Landfill Gas Energy

  1. Waste production : Raw materials
In Canada, human activity produces one ton of waste per person annually. It is the highest rate in the world.

  2. Waste in landfill sites
A important quantity of waste is sent to landfill sites. Waste decomposition produces gas, which is primarily made up of methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide, that contributes to the climate changes. Landfill gas or ''biogas'' is potentially dangerous and can be converted into a reliable source of energy used to produce electricity, feed industries and heat buildings (or greenhouses).

  3. Collecting biogas in horizontal wells
Horizontal wells are strategically installed throughout the landfill site, according to their radius of influence, in order to maximize biogas collection.

  4. Stabilizing gas production with modulators
Well operation parameters (extraction flow and pressure levels) are optimized in real time by SmartSoil operating software and modulators. Modulators are fully-integrated, self-contained, modular gas extraction equipment.

  5. Gas optimization support
However, gas production can only be managed with a gas optimization support program. The gas optimization support program ensures a stable, high energy gas production throughout the project. This reliable 24/7 program controls the following key points:algorithms, PID controls (Proportional Integral Differential), biological processes and fast actions.

  1. Boosters
    Boosters help maximizing biogas extraction.

  2. Computerized system
The SmartSoil Biogas process is entirely automated and the production of biogas is remote-controlled.

  3. Gas Treatment
Biogas is contains approximately 50% methane. It also contains other gas, such as corrosive diethylene dioxide. Gas treatment maintains power station turbines in good condition.

  4. Power station
The power station has turbines that produce electricity from biogas and switchgear (power generating unit), which connects to the power network according to very strict parameters and standards.

  5. Interconnection
Interconnection is the last and crucial stage. It consists in connecting the electricity produced to the power line that will bring it to the end user.

  6. Electricity transmission
To benefit from new business opportunities resulting from an open energy market, electricity must be transported and sold to the highest bidder. Electricity transmission involves building or adapting infrastructures and connecting them to adequate transport lines.

  7. Power sale
Finally, a solid power purchase agreement (PPA) with a broker, an industry or the city makes it possible to finance the project, in part or entirely.

  1. Compressors
Compressors are powerful fans which push biogas from the landfill to the end user.

  2. Computerized system
The SmartSoil-Biogas process is entirely automated and gas production is remote-controlled.

  3. Pipeline
The pipeline is the piping that carries biogas. Gas can then be used for feeding driers, producing steam, heating greenhouses, or it can be refined for public transit applications. Possibilities are endless. Securing a 15-year or more agreement with a reliable power purchaser helps ensure financial sustainability.

  4. Power sale
Finally, a solid power purchase agreement (PPA) with a broker, an industry or the city makes it possible to finance the project in part or entirely.
